SALE West Amateur Boxing Club honoured the late Paul Dunne with a tremendous showing at the Hvidovre Box Cup in Denmark.

Mr Dunne, who died in February, had been chief coach at the boxing club on Newbury Avenue and his memory was well represented by the club who brought seven fighters to the annual boxing tournament organised by Hvidovre Boxing Club.

Sale West A.B.C earned four gold medals won by Ian Dee, Connor Smith, 17, Cameron Smith, 13, and Joe Gavin, 17, as well as three silvers won by Bradley McCormack, Mike Smith, 19, and Patrick Brown, 15.

Carl Smith, club secretary and coach, said: “It was a great experience for all the boys. They showed true commitment to Sale West.

“It was an emotional moment seeing everyone get on the plane as they were going to another country for boxing. And since it was an international competition, they were not only representing Sale West but also Britain.”

Dee, 32, and McCormack, 18, were forced to box against one another in the finals while Cameron Smith repeated as winner as he competed in the tournament in 2014.

Mr Smith said: “We just want to grow and get the club back to where it was. It has given boys like Ricky Hatton an opportunity to succeed.

“All the boys were phenomenal and I’m sure Paul [Dunne] would have been watching over as they went into battle and would have been very proud of them all.”

* The club would like to thank everyone who contributed towards the cost of the trip. It is looking for funding for a mini bus to take them to shows together - contact Michael Brown on mikebrown2080@gmail.com
