MANCHESTER Giants head for Durham on Sunday in buoyant mood after ending their three-game losing streak in style.

Ingus Bankevics fired the Giants to a thrilling 101-90 BBL home win over Surrey United on Sunday.

The Latvian hit seven of his 10 three-point efforts for 28 points as Jeff Jones’s men held off a resurgence from United.

Stefan Gill was also prolific from deep, hitting all four of his strikes from behind the arc on his way to 23 points.

The Giants took the first quarter 28-25 and held a 49-41 lead going into half-time.

They built a lead of as much as 14 points before Surrey hit back with the score at 76-72 in the home team’s favour going into the final period.

The Giants started it strongly and built up another sizeable advantage which they held on to, despite a desperate Surrey effort.

Coach Jones said: “It’s great to get back to winning.

“We showed composure when Surrey put us under pressure in the second half and we got a good win.

“Ingus showed he can score but he’s also great defensively.”

The Giants had endured a tough Friday night in Sheffield.

The Sharks took revenge for the Giants’ win at the Trafford Sportsdome last month with a 96-80 win.

The Yorkshiremen were up 31-21 at the end of the first period and 58-41 ahead at half-time.

The Giants fought back in the third, narrowing the deficit to nine at one point.

But the Sharks took a 77-66 into the final quarter and stretched their lead.

Ben Eaves hit 15 for the Giants, Stefan Gill had 14, Ingus Bankevics 13 and Callum Jones 12.
