QPR midfielder Joey Barton has been banned for 12 matches by the Football Association following his red card at Manchester City, Press Association Sport understands.

Barton had a personal hearing on Wednesday after the Football Association charged him with two acts of violent conduct following his dismissal on the final day of the Barclays Premier League season at the Etihad Stadium.

The 29-year-old was shown a red card for elbowing Carlos Tevez and then kicked Sergio Aguero before appearing to attempt to headbutt Vincent Kompany.
