ALTRINCHAM'S third long away trip in a week ended in their premature exit from the FA Cup with a 1-0 defeat at Shildon.

Already weakened by the absences of Simon Richman, Sean Miller, Laurence Taylor and Josh Amis from their starting line-up, the Robins were also without goalkeeper Tim Deasy (injured) and Joel Brembo-Leta (cup-tied) before playmaker James Poole had to drop out of the team following the warm-up in the second qualifying round tie

Altrincham had the better of an unexceptional first half but, as so often this season, they lacked incision in front of goal. And when they did land shots on target, through John Johnston and James Jones, home goalkeeper Nick Liversedge was equal to the challenge.

The second half started scrappily before Altrincham enjoyed some attacking momentum but, throughout the game, they failed to capitalise on numerous corners and free kicks.

And in the latter stages, the home side threatened with more conviction.

But a replay looked on the cards until the last minute of normal time.

Alty centre-back Jones slipped as Railwaymen substitute Adam Burnicle got past him.

And, although the defender handled the ball, Burnicle got free to fire a shot wide of the near post.

However, the referee then pointed to the spot and showed Jones a red card, which was Alty's second dismissal in a week, following Max Harrop's early bath at Workington the previous Tuesday.

Tony Thompson saved Billy Greulich-Smith's spot-kick but the ball fell for substitute Cameron Fenton, who headed the winner into the empty net and sealed progress for the north-easterners.
