A STRIKE from Brogan Walsh was enough for Altrincham FC women’s team to secure maximum points against Stockport County in North West Regional Division One South at Mersey Valley.

Although the visitors turned up with the bare starting XI, they did frustrate the fifth-placed Robins.

The hosts dominated for large periods but could not convert that possession into a more comprehensive scoreline.

With the match just over a minute old, Alty had a glorious opportunity to take the lead when Laura Kelly crossed from the left and picked out an unmarked Megan Wright at the far post, but she steered her effort wide.

The Robins continued to force the issue, Wright and Walsh had chances off target while, just before the interval, Kelly had an effort cleared off the line.

After the break, Alty kept up the pressure and saw two penalty appeals for handball turned down, while Laura Dodds fired a free kick straight at the County goalkeeper and Kelly drove a low shot narrowly wide.

The breakthrough arrived on 62 minutes. Dodd’s corner was aimed at the far post, Louise Edleston pushed the ball into Walsh’s path and she steered home from close range.

Chances still came Alty’s way. Wright embarked on a weaving run before shooting straight at the keeper while Bliss Molyneaux lifted an effort over the bar following a corner but the one goal was enough.
