NEIL Young has added a left-back to his array of new signings after snapping up teenage prospect Callum Charlton from Huddersfield.

Bradford-born Charlton, aged 19, has the versatility to operate anywhere on the left flank, and Alty boss Young welcomed him to The J.Davidson Stadium and said: "Callum is a left-back who can also play as a winger.

"He is very quick and dynamic and will fit in well here."

The pacey left-sided specialist first took the eye at Brighouse Town and joined Championship side Huddersfield on a one-year contract 12 months ago, after impressing during a six-week trial.

Huddersfield’s development coach Frankie Bunn said at the time: "Callum did well in his trial period with us and has potential that is worth exploring, so we are delighted he has joined us.

"He possesses genuine pace – a good attribute for any player who likes to get forward – trickery and a decent delivery."

When Charlton became available at the end of his Huddersfield contract, Young wasted no time strengthening Alty’s left flank and adding to a new-look squad that is rapidly taking shape ahead of the new season.

The adaptable defender will fill a gap left by the departure of Adam Griffin, one of several members of last season’s relegated side not to be offered new terms when ex-Chester boss Young was appointed as successor to Lee Sinnott in the Alty hot seat.

Young has used his extensive network of contacts in the non-league game to bolster a new-look squad in all areas for what will be a testing season in a strong-looking National League North.
