ALTRINCHAM overcame the recent deluge to stage this delayed Cheshire Senior Cup match on Wednesday and were rewarded with an eight-goal victory, which earned them an away tie at Stalybridge Celtic in the next round.

After a recent lack of match action, Altrincham fielded a strong side against their lower league neighbours.

James Walshaw, back from injury, netted the first goal after 18 minutes, following a Nicky Clee cross.

Clee smartly netted the second goal from Rob Gilroy's feed, nine minutes later.

Two goals, straight after the interval, set the tone for the second half.

Damian Reeves, who had just come on, nodded a third goal after a Wilkinson lob came back off the crossbar.

Moments later, Gilroy netted after Clee's cross from the left. Jake Moult was put through the middle to make it 5-0, after 65 minutes, before two goals in a minute added to the uneven scoreline.

A finely struck shot from Wilkinson was the first of this duo and a well-taken shot from Lawrie was the second.

After seven goals from seven different scorers, James Lawrie broke the sequence with his second goal and Alty's eighth, after 85 minutes.

The visitors did not throw the towel in and had some bright moments, notably from Halfacre, but Altrincham put in a professional performance to advance into Round Two.

Next up for Altrincham, is a league trip to title contenders Hednesford Town this Saturday.
