Clitheroe 2 Trafford 0
12:33pm Wednesday 10th October 2012 in Sport
TRAFFORD slipped to a second successive defeat on Tuesday night when they were beaten 2-0 by a physical and aggressive Clitheroe outfit in their Evo Stik League Division One North clash at Shawbridge.
Following Saturday’s unfortunate FA Cup reversal at the hands of Marine, Garry Vaughan’s side could have no complaints about the result on this occasion as they were out-muscled on a surface that was far from conducive to their neat, short passing game.
Nevertheless the Trafford fans were far from happy with a number of challenges by the Clitheroe side and in the 15th minute home midfielder Simon Nangle was fortunate to escape with a yellow card for a late and cynical tackle on Andy Smart that resulted in the full back being replaced by Billy Burgess.
Trafford were unsettled by this substitution and almost fell behind in the 21st minute when Mark Buchan shot straight at Tom Read from 15 yards.
Daley Woods then blasted a drive from 30 yards just over before a brilliant full length of the field move ended with Kamahl Whight cracking in a shot that was spectacularly turned over the crossbar by Richard Mottram.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 29th minute when a corner from the left was flighted to the back post where Chris Smalley rose unchallenged to power a header past Read.
Shortly before half time, Kamahl Whight had another good chance to score but delayed his shot and the danger was cleared.
Clitheroe introduced substitute Jordan Williams at half time and he made an instant and remarkable impact when he collected the ball in midfield and crashed a magnificent drive from fully 30 yards past Read and into the top corner.
To their credit, Trafford continued to dominate possession and in the 58th minute leading goalscorer Michael Oates fired just wide following a free kick from the right.
Shelton Payne then fired into the side-netting before Daley Woods had a great chance to make it three but was denied by Read.
Trafford substitute Danny Shannon scooped a shot over the bar as the visitors fought to reduce the arrears but it wasn’t to be their day and Jordan Williams almost notched a second in the dying seconds but was thwarted by a save at point blank range by Read.
This was Trafford’s first league defeat of the season and they will be looking to get back to winning ways on Saturday when they entertain Ossett Town at Shawe View, kick off 3pm.
Then on Tuesday night they are in Manchester Premier Cup action with North West Counties League outfit Oldham Borough the visitors for a tie kicking off at 7-45pm.
