BOWDON Hockey Club saw both the men's and ladies first team earn very credible results as the early league tables start to take shape.

On Saturday Bowdon Hightown visited last year's Investec Hockey league Champions Leicester. Bowdon started brightly forcing a string of short corners in the opening minutes, before Tina Cullen broke the deadlock from a well rehearsed routine in the 10th minute.

The away side continued to dominate much of the first half but struggled to find an elusive second goal.

Leicester came out strongly in the second half, waiting until 54th minute when Katie Long managed to beat GB goalkeeper Kirsty Mackay in the Bowdon goal. The final 15 minutes ebbed and flowed with both sides creating chances, but ultimately satisfied with the 1-1 result, Bowdon Hightown earning their first point of the season. Sunday saw early league leaders Bowdon entertain Lancashire rivals Preston. Bowdon raced into a 3-0 lead with goals from Daniel, Ainsworth and Humphreys.

The lead was just reward for excellent intensity maintained throughout the first half, a buoyant home crowd encouraged by a performance from a squad that has seen a number of changes over the summer months.

The hard work shown in the first period was not replicated in the second half, the emerging squad showing a little inexperience. With two excellent wins back to back, Bowdon remain top and look forward to an away trip to Khalsa next Sunday.
