Stretford Sports Village, new leisure facilities – ready to go…

GAMES enthusiasts are promised superb facilites with the opening of the new Stretford Sports Village Leisure Centre.

Building contractor Kier has handed over the leisure centre and outdoor pitches to Stretford High School and Trafford Community Leisure Trust The facility has been developed through a partnership between Trafford Council, Stretford High and the community Leisure Trust.

Once open to the public, Stretford Sports Village will be the largest leisure facility in Trafford.

Two main centres will make up the sports village, the existing Stretford Leisure Centre, which will become the Chester Centre, and the new facilities at the high school, which will be the Talbot Centre.

The Talbot Centre provides a four-court sports hall, a dance studio, a fitness suite, a community room, accessible changing rooms, showers and toilets.

In addition, there is a floodlit synthetic turf pitch, funded by the Football Foundation, and a grass pitch both situated in an area of Gorse Hill Park, which the school already used during the school term.

Trafford Community Leisure Trust and Sport Trafford are currently working on the final touches at the new Talbot Centre so it is fully ready for public use.

Eileen Muir, the facility manager at the Talbot Centre, said “We are delighted that its now been handed over to us so we can start to get the community involved and using it.”

Leader of Trafford Council, Cllr Matt Colledge, said: “I am delighted to see this project come to fruition following much hard work by all the partners involved. This is a fantastic modern facility which will provide great opportunities for pupils at Stretford High School and the wider community to get active.

"It is one of a number of exciting projects taking place in Stretford, with the redevelopment of Trafford Town Hall and Lancashire County Cricket Club also giving a boost to the area.”
