Trafford 2 Sheffield 0
5:32pm Sunday 16th September 2012 in Sport
TRAFFORD extended their unbeaten start to the season to eight games on Saturday when they defeated the world’s oldest club, Sheffield FC, 2-0 at Shawe View in the Preliminary Round of the FA Trophy.
Visiting keeper Liam Flynn produced a magnificent one handed save to thwart Shelton Payne in the sixth minute but was powerless to prevent Trafford taking the lead two minutes later when Paul Ashton crossed from the left and Michael Oates ghosted in to head into the bottom corner.
Sheffield dangerman Chris Adam then struck a low shot that was comfortably held by Tom Read before Michael Oates should have made it two when he broke clear but shot past the far post.
Read produced another full length save to push a 20 yard drive by Steve Woodley behind for a corner and in the 36th minute Oates was released down the middle but was denied by a superb save by the impressive Flynn.
In the 38th minute Oates and Ashton combined once more to double Trafford’s lead but this time the roles were reversed with Oates clipping a neat cross from the right that allowed Ashton to head brilliantly inside the far post.
Trafford started the second half in a lethargic mood and Sheffield poured forward in an attempt to reduce the arrears.
Aaron Martin shot past the far upright from a great position, Brandon Cardwell headed a right wing corner against the foot of the far post and Chris Weir struck the same post from close range in a frantic four minute spell.
Aaron Martin headed over from eight yards but Sheffield’s cause was made all the more difficult in the 61st minute when James Knowles lunged at Trafford substitute Tom Schofield and was sent off for what was a second yellow card.
Undaunted by this setback, Sheffield pushed forward and Tom Read saved superbly to parry a Chris Adam thunderbolt before the same player sidefooted wide from 15 yards.
But it was Trafford who finished the game the stronger with Oates driving over from the edge of the area following a great move down the right and Shelton Payne seeing a rather weak shot held by Flynn.
Trafford were obviously delighted to win through to the next round on September 29 when they travel to play Harrogate Railway Athletic but they will be equally pleased with their goals tally in the eight games played so far which reads scored 28 and conceded just one.
On Saturday Trafford are in cup action once again when they entertain Spennymoor Town in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup, kick off 3 p.m., and then on Tuesday night they play host to New Mills in an Evo Stik League Division One North fixture kicking off at 7-45 p.m.
