Stunning finishing by Reeves

DAMIAN Reeves lit up Altrincham’s season with a stunning display of finishing on Tuesday night, destroying Gainsborough Trinity with 4 goals in the first 38 minutes.

Altrincham made it nine goals in two games, thereby surging from teetering above the relegation zone to a position within striking distance of the top five in a matter of four days.

Reeves tormented one of his main suitors in the close-season, as the big-spending Lincolnshire side just couldn’t live with an Altrincham team that literally took them apart from the very first minute.

It looked almost certain that the travelling Altrincham fans were not going to see any action at all, as floodlight failure delayed the start of the match by an hour, but just when it appeared that the referee would have no option, but to call the game off, the lights came on and the game went ahead.

Within two minutes, the Doncaster based striker latched on to a pinpoint feed from James Lawrie to get the Robins off to the best possible start and before half time, Lee Sinnott’s team were 4-0 up.

To their credit, Gainsborough responded well after the break & had enough chances to have made things pretty uncomfortable for Altrincham, who eventually ran out victors by 4-2.

Sinnott eulogised over the quality of Reeves’ display: “He scores all kinds of goals and I don’t think that there is anyone in this league that has the finishing repertoire that Damian has. After a slow start to the campaign, he has been absolutely clinical in the last three games.”

Incredibly, Reeves has now scored nine goals in the last 220 minutes of games played….averaging a goal every 24 minutes in that time.

Tuesday night’s win followed hot on the heels of a 5-0 demolition of Histon at Moss Lane on Saturday, with 18 year old Duncan Watmore proving almost unplayable, as he inspired the Robins to their first home win since March with an electric display of pace and skill that had Altrincham supporters drooling.

Altrincham are away again on Saturday, making their first ever visit to newly promoted Oxford City.
