Calum Turner
FIFTEEN-year-old sensation Calum Turner helped Stretford Cricket Club notch up their highest ever score at the weekend, hitting a superb 171 not out from a total of 390-4 in 50 overs.
Dukinfield were the visitors to Lesley Road for the JW Lees Lancashire County League fixture on Saturday and after losing the toss soon found out they were in for a bumpy ride.
Turner’s wicket never looked in danger in the face of some invitational bowling on a Stretford track that has rarely looked better.
With that said, a batsman must still fend off what he is dealt and Turner did this with eye-catching and accurate aplomb.
Opening the batting with Chris Barlow (26), the pair put on a quick 71 for the first wicket before Turner’s confidence grew further still in a partnership with captain Tyrone Lawrence.
Lawrence went on to score 72 from 78 balls as Turner passed his century in the thirtieth over. Their stand for the second wicket was a massive 201, another Stretford record.
It was then the turn of Namibian Raymond van Schoor to add some fireworks to the spiralling score with a lightning quick 74 in just 35 balls, including eight fours and three sixes.
Turner’s own innings contained 16 fours and 4 sixes and becomes the second highest individual score for Stretford. His father, Chris, scored 200 not out against Flixton in 1990, a record which now looks in imminent danger of being surpassed.
Dukinfield’s reply was never going to live up to the excitement of the first innings and was duly brought to an end at 187 all out.
Brad Holmes added to his already large tally of wickets for the season with another five wicket haul, while brother Adrian took 3-31.
Stretford have a league double header this weekend, away to Cheetham Hill on Saturday before hosting Woodhouses on Sunday.
