STRETFORD firefighter Sarah Baker led the UK Fire Service netball team to victory over Mereyside Police.

The newly formed national fire service outfit triumphed by 51 - 48 in the friendly fixture on July 15 at Wright Robinson Sports College, Gorton.

As the game got underway, the fire service went into a narrow lead thanks to accurate shooting from Michelle Carroll, who earned player of the match from Merseyside Police, and great defence from team captain Baker, who constantly harried and intercepted against Merseyside’s tall goal attack.

The final quarter was set for a great finish. Merseyside managed to get back to within one goal until the Fire Service started to strengthen in defence.

There were some crucial interceptions and great feeds from wing attack Emma Gibson, who was voted captain’s player of the match.

As the final whistle blew, UK Fire Service celebrated victory.
