Ashton-on-Mersey CC – 1st XI - 84 all out

AN Ashton on Mersey side ravaged by illness, injury and unavailability suffered a heavy loss at promotion chasing Davenham.

The home side won the toss and chose to bat, with openers John O’Sullivan and Dave Ashley starting cautiously against the bowling attack led by Alex Hewet and Joel Harris.

The home batsman struggled at first but grew in confidence to post 75 before Ashley fell victim to spinner Mo Asad.

A heavy rain shower interrupted the game but on the restart key player O’Sullivan batted expertly before finally being trapped by Hewet for 81.

The Davenham side declared on 189-6, with Mo Asad once again the bowling pick with 3-48.

A mixture of ill luck, poor shot selection and excellent bowling tore the heart out of the visitors reply and only a belligerent 33 from Mark Duncan prevented an even weaker response.

The innings ended on 84 with the ever reliable Dean Jackson taking 6-26.

Ashton on Mersey will be hoping for a return to form next week against Oakmere.

Ashton on Mersey’s 2nd XI also suffered a heavy loss at home to Davenham 2nds. The visitors posted 194-8 with the hosts being dismissed for 95.
