Recognition for trio

THIS year, three members of the Altrincham and District Athletic Club, Jeff Norman, Barry Chapman and Alan Blinston, celebrate 50 years membership, having joined the club during 1962.

They were presented with engraved plates, just as Alan Hardman, 81, had received last year, at a get-together at Timperley Taverners club on July 5.

Jeff Norman, 67, has represented Great Britian in the marathon at the Montreal Olympics in the 1970s and won the Yorkshire Three Peaks race on six consecutive occasions.

He still holds the world records for 30 miles and 50 kilometres which he set on the Timperley track in 1980.

Barry Chapman, 66, has been a stalwart of the clubs Track and Field team for more than 40 years. He still holds the senior club record for the javelin which he set in 1969 with a throw of 37.99 metres and he also holds club veteran records in 100m, 200m, 400m, hurdles, hammer, javelin, shot put, high jump and long jump.

Alan Blinston, 68, represented Great Britain in the 5000 metres at the Mexico City Olympics in 1968 and won a bronze medal in Great Britain in 1969 at the European Championships in Athens. At the end of the 1960s Alan won the Rivington Pike fell race on three consecutive occasions.
