Bredbury St Marks 161-7, Sale 135-9, match drawn

SALE’S winning start to the season ended on Saturday when they could only salvage a five point draw against newly-promoted Bredbury St Marks.

After asking the visitors to bat first, Sale’s main wicket-takers for once found it difficult to make an impression on the game and it was only with the help of three run-outs that they restricted Bredbury to 161 for 7 off their 50 overs. Calvin Flowers finished with 2 for 37.

Sale made a poor start in reply, losing their top three batsmen before reaching 40. At 76 for 6 after 28 overs there seemed to be little hope of victory but Jamal Benzafar and Andy Coleby added 48 for the seventh wicket to give their side a chance. However, Benzafar was caught on the boundary for 46 and two more quick wickets fell which left Sale no option but to play out for a disappointing draw.

Next week Sale meet neighbours and rivals Brooklands in what should be a fiercely contested game.
