Mixed Weekend for Brooklands CC

BROOKLANDS CC 1st XI produced their second poor performance in two weeks, losing by 58 runs at Cheadle Hulme on Saturday.

Things looked good for the visitors when they won the toss and elected to bowl first on a wicket that had been soaked by the previous night’s rain infiltrating the covers.

However, the wicket played better than might have been expected, and the Brooklands bowling lacked the required discipline, allowing the batsmen regular scoring opportunities.

Impressive hitting late in the innings from Australian all-rounder Tom Briscoe (59* from 50 balls) carried the hosts to an imposing 208-7 from their 45 overs.

Brooklands’ reply appeared to be in reasonable shape at 55-1, but a flurry of wickets reduced them to 70-6, from which point they were only looking to hold on for a draw.

Opener John Birchall (90*) stood firm, but was unable to find a willing partner, and they lost their final wicket in the 41st over at 150, Briscoe completing a good day with figures of 10-1-37-4.

The following day, Brooklands produced a much improved performance to win by 15 runs in the 2020 knockout competition at Bowdon.

The visitors score of 131-2 (John Birchall 78*, Nafees Din 42*) looked to be sub-par on an excellent wicket, but Bowdon lost wickets at regular intervals against a disciplined bowling performance and closed at 116-8, Christian Potter (4-24) being the pick of the bowlers.

Brooklands will look to get back to winning ways in the league when they host local rivals Sale on Saturday at 1pm at Georges Road.
