SALE youngster Matthew Dowson is celebrating after winning a gold medal in a taekwondo competition in Nottingham.

Altrincham Taekwondo member Matthew, 10, won gold in a National Open Sparring and Patterns Competition.

The St Hugh’s Primary School pupil’s achievement is even more impressive as this was only his second patterns competition.

He recieved high scores for both accuracy and presentation.

There was more success for the club as Hale Barns’ Sohaib Ashraf took silver in his fight, missing out on the gold medal by just one point.

Sohaib’s fellow Altrincham Grammar School student John Gwyneth lost his fight on points.

Instructor Cat Webb said: “I was so very proud. All students worked exceptionally hard and performed brilliantly on the day.”

The club are raising funds to allow Matthew to get to competitions in Milton Keynes and Ireland.
