Trafford MV play off misery

TRAFFORD MV 1st XV reached the play off for promotion from North Lancs Div One for the second successive season.

On a glorious day MV made the long journey to Whitehaven hopeing to go one step further than last season when they lost by a single point to Egremont.

Conditions were perfect and a well contested game was put together by both teams. The lead was exchanged on a number of occasions as both sides pressed for supremacy however there was not much between the teams.

Whitehaven used their big forward runners to good effect and MV strung together some good passages of play to show the potential that the team has. Too much ball was kicked away by MV and it was often the case that this kicked ball went to the usefull Whitehaven full back.

MV ended up having to chase the game and their spirit was killed when after stringing 20 phases of play together the ball was eventually spilled for the opposition to pick up and race away to score a killer try.

The large crowd enjoyed an entertaining game and losing the game 33-22 did not do justice to MV's season.

The team management must now go away and restructure the team, who are likely to lose a couple of players from the squad over the summer. The club will be looking to recruit quality amateur players as well as looking at specific areas of play to develope for next term.

Trafford MV's youth policy continues to improve and the Under 14 side became the first in the clubs history to reach a county cup final. On Sunday in attrocious conditions MV met Preston Grasshoppers but found the task too hard and came home as runners up following a spirited 22-10 defeat. MV are looking to parents and teachers from the Trafford area to encourage youngsters to look at Rugby Union as an alternative sport to football. The club sees a huge amount of potential talent in the area..
