Sophia set for a second term

SALE Golf Club’s new lady captain Sophia Casey (pictured) brings a wealth of golfing experience and success as she looks to enjoy her second spell in the role in her club’s 99th season.

Sophia joined Sale in 1978 and had a lowest handicap of seven and it is still a very creditable 13.

She was lady captain in 1996 and lady president in 2005 and was also the first lady to be voted on to the club council where she was involved with greens and house matters.

Among her proudest playing successes was to be a member of the Sale team who won the MDLGA Bell Cup in 1989 and 2010 - the only times they won the coveted trophy.

Sophia has won numerous competitions at her club as well as the Briggs Trophy at Mere and she has also represented the Cheshire B team on several occasions.

Sophia said: “I am supporting Factor 50 as my chosen charity along with the captain Peter Middleton and with my previous experiences of being in the top offices I am looking forward to a successful and very enjoyable year in a great club with a superb course.”

Sale ladies played a Five Club Stableford and it was won by Carolyn Stockwell with 35 points from Jennifer Dolphin 34 with Cynthia Hammond, Elizabeth Penney and Gill Ross all on 32.

Sale’s new Captain Peter Middleton was first past the post in a singles Stabelford with 31 points, one more than Richard Humfress.

A singles Stableford at Ashton-on-Mersey saw David Edwards lead in with 43 points from Graham Hegg and Jeff Ashton, both 41.

Mike Kirchin is the new holder of the Sharp Memorial Trophy at Hale after notching up a huge par score of +9 to finish six clear of Peter Veitch and John Hulbert.

Hale’s ladies played a singles Stableford and Caroline Perkin led in with 32 points, one more than Clare Withey.

Flixton ladies played a 12-hole Stableford and it was won by Anita Carey with 22 points from Irene Braithwaite 20.

Anita made it a double as she then posted 22 points to win a 15-hole Cancer Relief Stableford again from Irene Braithwaite who posted 20 points.

Davyhulme Park’s men played a BB Stableford and it was won with 42 points by Naimian Nader and Kevin Griffiths.

Park’s ladies played a 15-hole medal and Cheryl Gillings was the main lady with 59, from Sue Malcolmson 60.

Another top-class Manchester Alliance field enjoyed a Birchwood course in great condition and the day produced some fine golf and tight finishes.

It was a great debut for new Alliance sponsors GAP Convenience Distributors, based in Lancashire and represented by Fiona Drummond and Christine Brough.

Knutsford pro Tim Maxwell took time out from his busy Maxitours schedule to show his lasting class as he topped the individual pro section with a fine haul of 41 points to finish ahead of Danny Wardrop (Didsbury) 39 and home star Phil Archer and Swinton Park’s David Smith, both 38.

It was tight in the pro am section with just a point separating the top six pairs.

Order of Merit leader Graham Cox and his Davenport partner Matt Dent just made top spot with 42 points, one clear of the chasing pack.

Winning the cpo on 41 points for second spot were Graham Neville (Mere) and Malcolm Wells (Didsbury) from Phil Archer and Steve Bluefield (Birchwood) and Danny Wardrop and his dad Mike, Tim Maxwell and Richard Massey and Gatley’s Tom Bolton and Mike Bourke.

There were clear winners in the am am section with Hart Common triumphing for the second week in a row.

This time it was Marcus Corfield and Simon Cudlip who led in with 42 points from Jeff Bennett and Keith Marden (Dunscar) 41 and Stamford’s Tony Smith and Mike Hewitt 39.
