Narrow defeat for Shawe View youngsters in an entertaining encounter against Skelmersdale

Trafford 0 Skelmersdale United 1

Skem edged a feisty encounter at Shawe View on Saturday with a 77th minute goal by substitute Chris Almond giving them the points.

Trafford started brightly and in the first minute midfielder Joe Shaw cracked in a drive that Ryan McMahon pushed behind for a corner.

Shaw then blasted over from 15 yards before the visitors built neatly down the right and Mark Houghton saw his strike from close range disallowed for offside.

The visitors began to take control and in the 18th minute Liam Loughlin screwed his shot wide from the edge of the penalty area.

Steve Akrigg headed a left wing corner over the bar but McMahon was fortuntate shortly afterwards when his weak clearance fell to Trafford skipper Melford Knight who shot straight back into the keeper’s arms.

Skem dangerman Kevin Towey superbly teed the ball up for Karl Ledsham in the 25th minute but home keeper Aaron Tyrer produced a fine full length save and the game became scrappy and disjointed as the referee struggled to maintain control.

On the stroke of half time Scott Metcalfe had a great chance to give Trafford the lead when put clear by Greg Hall but he wastefully chipped the ball over with just McMahon to beat.

Knight and Metcalfe both went close to breaking the deadlock in the early stages of the second half but in the 62nd minute Aaron Tyrer once again rescued his team-mates with a brilliant save to tip Towey’s drive around the post.

In the 77th minute Skem broke down the left and the ball fell kindly at the feet of substitute Chris Almond who slotted in from close range.

Trafford pushed forward in search of the equaliser with Shelton Payne leading the charge and in the 84th minute he saw his drive fly wide of the far post.

Two minutes later Payne struck a fierce shot that McMahon fumbled but the well- drilled Skem defence scrambled the ball clear.

Time ran out for the Shawe View youngsters and a highly entertaining game watched by a large and appreciative crowd saw the visitors return down the M62 with all three points.

On Saturday Trafford travel over the Pennines for a Unibond League Division One North encounter with Ossett Albion, kick off 3pm, and then on Tuesday night Woodley Sports are the visitors to Shawe View for a league fixture kicking off at 7.45 pm.
