MONTY Milner is a true stalwart of Northenden Golf Club and the Mersey Valley clubs where is proud to be the current captain of Mersey Valley Captains' Golf Society.

Milner said: “The idea of forming the Mersey Valley Captains' Golf Society began five years ago on the occasion of the match with the Bolton and District Captains.

“On the evening of this match Peter Gleave presented the idea of forming a society similar to the Bolton Captains for the Mersey clubs with Peter Goodliffe, David Bentley and Ian Hales.

“Peter Gleave, Peter Goodliffe and Ian Hales made individual presentations to the entire group explaining their thoughts of getting a society off the ground.

“There were strong feelings we should go ahead and if the idea was successful then it was agreed Peter Goodliffe would be the first captain.

“A steering committee was formed and over the next 12 months numerous meetings were held.

"Peter Gleave chaired this steering committee comprising the following captains – David Bentley, Gary Unsworth, Bob Bolton, Dick Browne, Alan Stewart, Peter Goodliffe, Bob King and himself.

“Our grateful thanks should be recorded to the above captains for their enthusiasm and effort they all generously gave in getting the now successful society off the ground.

“Eventually, it was agreed a society should be formed and called the Mersey Valley Captains' Golf Society, and it was agreed the five Mersey clubs plus Davyhulme and Ashton-on-Mersey be invited.

"It was agreed Peter Goodliffe would be the first captain and that the new committee should comprise of a member from each of the seven clubs.

"These were recruited and Peter Goodliffe was to be the captain and secretary and David Bentley the treasurer –both from Withington.

"Peter Gleave stood down as there were already two members from Withington.

"Meanwhile, Peter Broadbent, from Sale, Geoff Massey, from Didsbury, myself, from Northenden, and Mike Goman, from Davyhulme, were recruited and the society was born.

“Paul Thornton from Ashton-on-Mersey joined during the third year and we now have nearly 100 members.”

The competition team winners at Northenden with 83 points were David Marsden (Davyhulme Park), Mike Earley (Northenden), Ian Bullough (Sale) and Bill Wells (Didsbury).

The remaining 2018 fixture is Captain's Day on October 1 at Sale.
