FLIXTON golfer David Chesworth scooped the prestigious Balfour Cup singles medal after a card play-off.

It is only the second time a Flixton member has won the coveted trophy – the last being B Watson in 1995.

The historic Balfour Cup has been played for since 1897 by golfers from clubs within a 25-mile radius of Manchester Town Hall and it was given a great host venue in Manchester Golf Club for the 2018 singles medal.

Manchester provided a superb and challenging course with a big field of 85 players enjoying a great day superbly organised by the Balfour and Houldsworth Committee.

Chesworth, of Flixton Golf Club, posted a card of 77-6=71 to win a card play-off from Robert Faiyaz, of Swinton Park Golf and Country Club, three less than Derek Hopkins (Prestwich) and James Parton (Stand).

THE Bunty Booth Trophy is one of the Manchester and District Ladies' Golf Association’s top competitions featuring players from their 80 plus member clubs who won their own club qualifying

competition in the previous season.

Lymm Golf Club were excellent hosts for the 2018 event with a fine course backed by superb weather.

It is the biggest competition of its kind in the country and there were nearly 70 clubs represented in a very close Stableford competition.

It needed a card play-off on 37 points to see Lynda Knapper, of Stand Golf Club, with a better back-six holes, win from Hilary Craven (Romiley).

Just one point separated them from Sheila Kenlock (Accrington) who won the card play-off from Jo Miller (Turton), Victoria Bithell (Haydock Park) and Nikki Martin (Leigh).

The MDLGA President Tricia Hunt (Prestbury) gave out the prizes and complimented the winners on their success and outstanding play and also gave deserved thanks to Lymm for their excellent work, both on and off the course, and to all of the MDLGA officials for their efficient organisation.
