PHIL Parkinson backed champions Altrincham to hit the ground running in the National League North next season after seeing them celebrate promotion in style with a 3-0 win against Hednesford at a packed J.Davidson Stadium on Saturday.

A dominant display by the runaway title winners in front of nearly 2,000 Alty fans was followed by the presentation of the Evo-Stik Premier trophy, leaving Parkinson reflecting with immense satisfaction on a hugely-successful first season in charge.

"We went close (to promotion) at Nantwich, but it was the right decision to go when Altrincham came calling 12 months ago," he said.

"Altrincham were absolutely the right club, and everything has panned out exactly as I had it in my head.

"Everyone knows what happened here prior to this season, with two successive relegations, and it’s a fact no one has ever bounced back up from our division at the first time of asking.

"Well, we’ve done it, and the word that sums it up for me is pride, sheer pride.

"It was a fantastic performance and result, but we’ve come to expect that.

"The lads I have recruited weren’t just for this league – they’re good enough for the league above.

"Sometimes I have to pinch myself to realise the position I’m in, especially when I see our supporters turning out in numbers and getting behind the lads in a way that has helped us over the line.

"That’s a motivating factor for me – seeing how much it means to other people drives me on.

"I’ve loved the NPL and think it’s a fantastic league, but I can’t wait to get going again in the National League North. These are exciting times."

Director Bill Waterson delivered a statement of intent in his programme notes by writing: "Already the club are planning for next season, and our intent on the field is to selectively strengthen the squad, so that we can mount a challenge in our first season back in the National League North."

After Saturday's game, the club's end-of-season awards were presented and the winners were: Supporters' player of the season – Jordan Hulme; players' player of the season – Jake Moult; goal of the season – John Johnston (v Barwell); manager's player of the season – Jordan Hulme; most improved player – Max Harrop; young player of the season – John Johnston.
