AN HORRIFIC injury to Trafford striker Danny Frost when he crashed into the perimeter wall in the 62nd minute led to the abandonment of Trafford's crucial Evo-Stik North clash at Colwyn Bay on Saturday.

But for the swift intervention of assistant referee Zharir Mustafa, who administered immediate first aid on the stricken forward, things could have been far worse.

As it was, referee Kristian Silcock abandoned the game after a 35-minute delay and it was just over an hour before an ambulance arrived on the scene.

Frost was then taken to a local hospital where he underwent a brain scan and was eventually given the all-clear and discharged at 11pm.

Prior to this incident, the hosts had totally dominated the game, taking the lead in the 24th minute when Danny Bartle tapped in from close range following a great run and low cross by Jack Hindle.

Trafford defender Steve Mason headed a Sean Miller free kick just over and then saw his drive from 15 yards parried by Matt Cooper but it was Bay who were dominating and Hindle and Bartle combined once more but were denied by a superb save at point-blank range by Grant Shenton.

Trafford manager Tom Baker made a double substitution at half time with Jack Dorney and James Dean replacing Miller and Darius Palma but in the 58th minute Bay struck again when the menacing Hindle crossed from the left and Danny Andrews bundled the ball home at the far post.

Four minutes later the dreadful injury to Frost occurred when he was chasing a long ball towards the goal line at top speed and the wet conditions meant he had little chance of stopping his forward momentum.

Thankfully for Frost, the presence of Mustafa prevented a tragedy from occurring.

Trafford Fc later tweeted: "We would like to say “thank you” to Assistant Ref Zharir Mustafa who, with his quick reaction to go to the aid of @DannyFrosty07, undoubtedly prevented an unthinkable outcome this afternoon. Words can’t express the gratitude of us all."

Colwyn Bay also praised match officials and their own staff as fans left the ground after wishing Frost a swift recovery, tweeting: "Get well soon Danny. Thank you to the referee’s assistant who reacted instantly to Danny Frost’s terrible injury today – you were amazing! Also to Colwyn Bay juniors coach Danny McGoona and both medical teams for their superb help. Also big thanks to our stewards."
