JAMES Guy has pushed himself to the limit in the Gold Coast – so much so he has vomited and almost passed out but the triple world champion is confident he has found the right schedule for the future.

Former Swim Trafford star Guy added 100m butterfly silver to the bronze he won in the 400m freestyle, as well as three relay silvers.

However his week has been marked by dehydration following his heat in the 200m butterfly on Saturday, causing the former Forest Preparatory School pupil to pull out of the final.

Despite that scare, Guy believes he has found the formula to avoid a repeat in future – with the 400m freestyle set to disappear from his programme.

He said: “The 200m fly a few days ago, I felt like I hadn’t swum for a week, I felt so bad. Having that evening off and withdrawing from the final made such a difference. I think it’s going well, there were just a couple of things I didn’t get right at this meet.

“The 400m free is definitely going (from my programme), I’ve never done a fresh 200m free before, I’ve always had the 400m free first. If I can go in with fresh legs and fresh arms, who knows what I can do?

“I just think it will make a difference not doing the 400 free and exerting myself so early in the week.

“This week I was lying on the floor and almost thought I was going to pass out waiting for an ambulance so we’ve gone from that extreme.”

On Monday, Guy managed a time of 51.31secs to come home second in the 100m butterfly behind close friend and Olympic champion Chad le Clos, who broke a Games record on his way to gold.

That wrapped up Guy’s individual races before the 4x100m medley relay on Tuesday, where he won another silver alongside another close friend, Adam Peaty – who was surprisingly beaten on Monday.

Guy added: “I think it was always going be a tough ask to win (the 100m fly) but I wanted to go for it and give it my all. I’m much better than I was a few days ago and to get a silver medal behind one of my best friends is fantastic.”
