TRAFFORD MV picked up a well-deserved bonus point in a 36-25 win against local rivals Eccles to climb one place to seventh in the North Lancs/Cumbria Division.

MV opened brightly and with only a couple of minutes gone, second-row Andy Clegg broke through from close range for the opening score and Pat Eccles converted.

The visitors responded with a penalty and a converted try to put them ahead.

MV's Cheshire youth player, Greg Warren, then scored as the hosts regained the lead and Pat Eccles converted again, before another penalty for the visitors.

With half time approaching, Jamie Kingdon, who was having a good game in both attack and defence, broke down the left and held off cover tackles to cross the whitewash and give MV a 19-13 lead at the break.

Trafford had to make changes with captain Andy Quigley taking a knock and former MV U16 player Kai Fagan making his first XV league debut.

Fagan made an immediate impact as he burst through the centre to crash over under the posts giving Pat Eccles the easiest of kicks.

MV struck again, this time down the right, as prop Jack Gobbett broke free to offload to James Matthie who raced down the wing to dive over by the corner flag.

The hosts lost Pat Eccles to a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on and the extra man saw the visitors score as MV reorganised, the converted try making it 31-20.

In the later stages of the game tries were exchanged as young Ethan Cornick broke away from a line-out to force his way over and Eccles picked up a consolation as the time faded away.

It was a solid win for MV and their six-try performance puts them closer to their target of a top-six finish in their second season at the level.

This weekend MV travel to Burnley.
