OWEN Monk’s goal helped him to a second successive man-of-the-match award as Urmston Hockey Club's men’s seconds kept up their 100-per-cent record with a 3-0 win against Southport men’s seconds.

Dan Downes and Richard Gorman also netted as the Greens stretched their run to three games with a strong team performance in which James Kelly, Jim Mair, and Chris Bates also shone.

Jennie Dixon starred as she stepped in between the sticks but was unable to prevent a 3-0 defeat for the ladies thirds against Prescot ladies’ thirds.

The result did not reflect Urmston’s battling performance with players’ player Dixon outstanding and Tia Sharp, Grace Gauntlett-Hessing, and Lucy Buckley also impressive in defence.

Captain Moe Rothwell latched onto Charlotte O’Toole’s defence-splitting pass for the ladies’ seconds to score against the University of Manchester ladies’ seconds but it was the university side who took all three points with a 3-1 win.

Danieca Clegg was impressive in goal, while new girl Rachael Smith picked up the players’ player award on her debut alongside returning Jo Staples.

For the second week running, the men’s firsts lost to the last touch of the game as University of Liverpool firsts scored a penalty corner to win 3-2.

Andy Power and Brad Bates netted in a much stronger performance for the side but could not turn their dominance into their first points of the season.

A threadbare ladies’ firsts were unlucky as two late goals from Wrexham ladies’ firsts condemned them to a 4-2 loss, despite goals from Becky Crossley and Stacey Bell.

Andy Shenton was on the scoresheet as the men’s thirds lost 5-1 to a strong Bowdon sevenths side, despite drawing 1-1 at the interval.
