A RAIN-RUINED game saw Ashton-on-Mersey's first XI draw at Congleton in Cheshire Cricket League Division One.
Choosing to bat first, Congleton’s opening pair of Tom Blease (56) and Kevin Waterhouse (52) played with aplomb to post a century partnership.
James Marshall finally got the breakthrough and then proceeded to bowl an excellent spell which troubled all the Congleton batsmen.
Some late-order hitting took the score to 185-5 before the home side declared in the hope of forcing a result. Marshall took all five wickets in a superb spell of seam bowling before rain returned to wipe out any further play.
The drama of the weekend was provided by Ashton ladies, who pulled off a memorable win at league champions Wistaston Village.
Batting first, Wistaston found the Ashton attack in fine form with skipper Amanda Gettins leading the way with 2-15.
With the support bowling chipping in, Wistaston struggled to 113 off their 40 overs.
Ashton set about the task with a calm batting performance, led by Azure Wilkinson, whose unbeaten 37 put the visitors on course for victory.
With rain leaving a reduced target, Becky Baldock and Sarah Sutcliffe used their experience to stay with Wilkinson to post a four-wicket win.
