SALE Golf Club defied poor weather conditions to stage an excellent introduction session for ladies new to golf at their taster morning.

Sale manager John Jackson, who had linked up with Cheshire support officer Sean Hammill to set up the event, said: “We all enjoyed coffee and biscuits on arrival and had a little putt inside the clubhouse while we waited for the weather to clear up.

“Our professional Mike Stewart then explained the purpose of each golf club and how they have different lofts to hit different distances.

“We then split into two groups – I took a group on the practice ground and Mike took the other group on the putting green and chipping green and the ladies learned the basic set-up and had a go hitting some shots with a seven iron.

“We then swapped over and finished with a putting competition on the 18th green and a group of Sale ladies, led by lady captain Moira Forster and president Carol Broadbent, gave valuable assistance and encouragement throughout the session.

“Several of the new ladies signed up for a five-week coaching programme and all-in-all it was an enjoyable and productive session for those who took part.”

Meanwhile, Manchester and District Golf Club Captains took on local rivals Bolton and District at Ellesmere in a closely-fought contest.

Bolton emerged with a narrow 5½-4½ victory to claim the coveted Harken Trophy, which was presented to Bolton captain Glynn Evans by Manchester vice captain Tony Gregory, of Stockport.

Both teams were made welcome, both on and off the course, by Ellesmere captain Peter Keown and look forward to renewing acquaintances and rivalries in 2018.
