URMSTON Tennis Club is celebrating Wimbledon finals weekend on July 15 and 16 by throwing open its courts to members of the public, inviting them to join in free tennis sessions and hosting a fundraising barbeque.

All 11 courts will be open to non-members from 12.30pm on Saturday 15th and from 2pm on Sunday July 16 with a family and friends BBQ taking place on Sunday afternoon from 3.30pm. Club coaches will be on hand to provide advice and guidance with the opportunity to watch the men’s and ladies finals in the club house bar.

The club on Moorside Road, which faced closure in 2006, is now thriving with six recently refurbished courts including five grass courts, over 120 members and five adult teams with plans to expand this further next season.

Chris Ryan, club chairman, said: “We have gone from strength to strength over the past few years and have lots to celebrate so hosting this community event over the Wimbledon finals weekend is the perfect opportunity.

“Whether you are a current member, an ex-member or have been inspired by watching Wimbledon on the television and want to give tennis a go, please come down and join in the fun. The open court sessions are free, we even provide rackets for complete beginners, although we will be happy to accept a small donation if you wish to make one.”

Additionally, the free ‘Welcome Wednesday’ sessions continue to take place each week weather permitting, with on average 50-60 children and adults taking part each week in group coaching and playing sessions, resulting in 40 new members joining the club this season.
