DAVID Shepherd, the new captain of Davyhulme Park Golf Club, is looking forward to spending plenty of time at his favourite hole on the course during the coming year.

Shepherd, handicap 20 and lowest 18, said: “My favourite hole on the course is the 19th which I feel is equally important as the game itself and the people you meet and play with.

“Whatever the result, I always look forward to sharing a drink with my playing partners and meeting up in the clubhouse with other members after playing.

“I am really excited about the year ahead, our course is in fantastic condition despite the wet weather and our new professional Martyn Hamer has settled in really well.

“He has been getting rave reviews for his coaching from our members and his new junior programme is thriving.

“Visitors are always welcome to DHP and can reserve tee times through our online booking system or by contacting the club.

“My hobbies other than golf are watching Manchester City and Lancashire CC, playing five-a-side football and snooker and walking our dog Lola with my family and I expect to be playing much more golf in the coming year than my current once or twice a week.

“The lady captain and I are supporting a local charity – the Delamere Special Needs School in Urmston.

“My own personal golfing highlight, apart from being asked to be captain, has been playing Pebble Beach and sharing the experience with my son at my side.

“My dream fourball to play in would include Jordan Spieth – my current favourite player and perhaps he could get us onto Augusta National – Donald Trump – to see what he is really like – and Sir Ian Botham – to entertain us with stories from his career.”

The Bell Cup is the blue riband competition for the Manchester and District Ladies' Golf Association with nearly 90 clubs from across the region seeing their best seven players in a terrific match-play knockout competition.

The aim is to reach finals day for the last four teams in the competition with the semi-finals and final being held at Bury Golf Club, the home club of MDLGA president Audrey Bird, on September 1.

The preliminary round and round one have been completed and it is now down to the last 32 clubs with holders Dean Wood making an early exit being beaten 4&3 by Wilpshire.

The draw for round two involving local clubs includes: Hale v Shaw Hill, Knutsford v Sandiway and Didsbury v Chapel.
