ASHTON-on-Mersey’s new lady captain Fiona Vaughan-Thomas has been handed a major captain’s role for the second time.

Her first one came in 1999 when she was the captain of the Welsh Girls' Under-18s' team and she led them to victory, for the first time in the WGU history, in the home internationals and the Triple Crown at High Post Golf Club.

Then her team were selected to play in the home internationals at Royal St David’s and did the double.

She has been a member at Ashton for 15 years and is head of PE at Sale High School.

She has a current handicap of 3.6 and her best was +1 when she played for Wales u18s and her favourite course is Nefyn and District, where she honed her golfing skills and learned to play from the age of eight.

Vaughan-Thomas said: “Ashton-on-Mersey is also a super course with challenging holes and it’s not easy due to tight fairways and plenty of trees waiting for wayward drives.

"My favourite hole is the eighth/17th as the second shot needs to be accurate to be rewarded.

“We have a great ladies' section full of enthusiastic golfers and we always welcome anyone who wants to join us.

“I play, during term time, once during the winter months and sometimes twice in the summer as school fixtures take priority. School holidays are a blessing as they allow me to play more.

“I used to play hockey for Sale ladies, but old age has caught up with my knees and I now enjoy experimenting with new recipes.

“The football team I support is Liverpool as I grew up in North Wales and people there either supported Liverpool or Manchester United and I chose Liverpool to copy my big brother.

“My chosen charity during my terms in office is North West Young Epilepsy that I will be sharing with my captain Andy Byrne.

“My chosen players to join me in a fourball would be Peter Alliss, for his humour and knowledge and I also grew up watching ‘A Round with Alliss', Laura Davies – she’s just cool – and Rory McIlroy to experience his game first hand and not just on TV.”
