TWO well-taken second-half goals not only secured Altrincham FC women’s eighth league win of the season, but also saw them complete their second league double after beating Northwich Vixens 2-0 at Lostock Gralam FC.

The first-half performance saw Alty yet again dominate but fail to convert a host of chances.

Megan Rowley had an effort rebound off the bar, while Megan Wright fashioned an opening, only to steer her shot agonisingly wide.

Jade Hesketh also worked a shooting chance, her acute-angled shot well saved.

In the second half Vixens were quicker out of the blocks and Alty goalkeeper Lizzie Brereton was forced into making an impressive save.

Undeterred, Altrincham kept on pushing and probing and were rewarded with the opening goal on 68 minutes.

Wright intercepted a free kick, passed to Hesketh with her back to goal and released an angled pass to Rowley – a player who has made her way through the youth ranks.

She ran into space and unleashed an angled shot that nestled inside the far post for her first ever senior goal.

Alty kept pouring forward and the second goal duly arrived on 88 minutes.

Georgia Vernardakis dinked the ball into space on the right releasing Rowley and cutting inside, her by-line effort was pushed out by the Vixens’ goalkeeper.

Kate Bryan reacted the quickest to smash her shot home to secure victory.

In their previous outing, played at The J.Davidson Stadium, Hesketh’s last-gasp strike against Liverpool City was enough to see a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw.

After a goalless first half, Liverpool took the lead on 52 minutes with an exceptional goal.

Hughes found a yard of space and unleashed a long-range shot that flew into the top right from an acute angle.

The visitors doubled their lead on 80 minutes through Hughes again but Alty pulled a goal back in the 86th minute, Vernadakis dinking a ball over the top for Laura Kelly to run on to and expertly place home a diagonal shot.

With the last attack of the match, the Robins levelled. Brogan Walsh slipped a through-ball to Hesketh who kept her composure and rounded the goalkeeper to slip a left-footed shot into the net.

With only two league fixtures left Altrincham's women will finish in their highest league position since they were formed in 2011.
