A THUNDERBOLT from 25 yards by Luke Porritt earned Ossett Albion a 1-0 away win and severely dented Trafford’s Evo-Stik First Division North play-off hopes.

The hosts dominated for most of the game with skipper Josh Granite heading straight at Brett Souter in the 10th minute and Ash Woods squandering a great chance three minutes later when he broke clear but was denied by a brave block by the Albion keeper.

The visitors' defence was superbly marshalled by captain Stefan Holt and Trafford had to wait until two minutes before the interval for another goalscoring opportunity, Woods pulling the ball back from the dead-ball line and Greg Daniels blazing his shot well over.

And in the dying seconds of the first half Albion had their first attempt on goal when Rob Bordman blasted a free kick from 20 yards that was blocked by Luke Horrocks.

The second half began in a similar vein with Trafford enjoying all the possession but still struggling to create any chances of note.

Woods produced a great turn in the 52nd minute but saw his shot blocked by Greg Hunter and on the hour appeals for a penalty fell on deaf ears when Ally Brown appeared to be impeded as he cut in from the right.

Another Bordman free kick was held at the foot of the post by Terry Smith but most of the play was centred on the Albion penalty area with Trafford substitute Craig Lindfield twice heading wide at the back post.

In the 76th minute disaster struck for Tom Baker’s side when Porritt collected the ball in midfield and rifled a tremendous drive past Smith and into the top corner.

Trafford poured forward in search of the equaliser but once more they were unable to fashion any openings and keeper Souter was relatively untroubled.

The final whistle signalled a devastating defeat for the hosts who slip down to fourth in the table, but they can now be overtaken by both Colne and Ossett Town.

On Saturday Trafford are in action at Shawe View once again when they entertain Kendal Town, kick off 3pm.
