URMSTON Hockey Club's men's first team moved top of Division One with two wins last weekend as they won 3-1 and 6-2 against Keswick and Bowdon thirds respectively.

Andy Power helped himself to two braces with Brad Bates notching twice alongside a double for Stefan Wasilewski.

Jonathon Downes also nudged Power’s long pass into an empty goal after the talkative Bowdon goalkeeper had been sin-binned.

Mike Tonge’s tireless display against Keswick earned him the man-of-the-match award on Saturday while Bowdon were unable to cope with Richard Wood’s midfield masterclass on Sunday.

Matt Downes’ hat-trick spearheaded the men’s seconds' continuing fine form in Division Five North South with a 6-1 hammering of Horwich men’s firsts.

He was joined on the scoresheet by brother Dan Downes and Sam Brocklehurst’s strike to round off another emphatic victory.

The win leaves the Greens in third place with four games left having won five of their last six, scoring 29 goals in the process.

The men’s thirds, meanwhile, moved into fourth place in Division Six North South as they beat City of Manchester fourths 6-3, making it three successive wins.

The ladies’ teams struggled against strong opposition however, with Division Two South West table-toppers Deeside Ramblers firsts beating the Urmston firsts 5-1.

The ladies’ seconds also fell to Division Three leaders Rochdale 3-2 and University of Manchester thirds 5-0.
