BROOKLANDS Poynton Ladies firsts maintained their position at the top of the Investec Women's Hockey League Conference North with a 5-0 victory against bottom-of-the-table Belper.

The first goal came just 12 minutes into the match, with Claire Wallace capitalising on a shaky clearance.

It did not take long for Brooklands to widen the lead with a well-taken deflection from Carro Hulme on the end of a searching cross.

As Belper settled into the match, the away side turned up the pressure but goalkeeper Maud Lelkens and Brooklands' formidable defence were able to keep out any open-play opportunities.

Brooklands were further rewarded for their persistence during the second half.

After testing opposition backlines all season, Annabelle Watton deservedly made it onto the scoreboard with an excellent volley.

Helen Turner was unlucky not to secure a hat-trick, bagging two goals in the latter stages of the game.

The second of her two goals exemplified a great team performance from the Brooklands side that connected well between the lines for the duration of the game.

This weekend, Brooklands face University of Durham looking to continue their good form.
