SWIM Trafford's performance squad are aiming for another prosperous year after a successful 2016.

The team received the Top Club award at the Sunderland Swimming Club competition last summer.

And they enjoyed North West regional success, finishing fifth overall at the annual meeting at Manchester Aquatics Centre – only beaten by big clubs Stockport, Salford, City of Liverpool and Pioneer 79.

Trafford Borough Junior nine to 12-year-old swimmers also represented Swim Trafford in the final round of the North West Micro League.

It was a close competition with all the teams showing good depth but Swim Trafford came out on top with 14 swimmers qualifying for British, Scottish, Welsh and English Summer Championships.

Many of the swimmers made the finals and smashed their personal best times.

Hannah and Laura Head won medals at the Welsh nationals, while Max Martin and Craig McNeil picked up medals at the English nationals.

McNeil was Swim Trafford overall Swimmer of the Year, chosen not just for his swimming ability but also for volunteering.

He volunteered at the European championships in London where he was a medal chaperone and had the opportunity to meet many of the top European athletes, including ex-Swim Trafford star James Guy, who won a silver medal at the Rio Olympics.

The success of the team last year was a credit to all the volunteers behind the scenes and coaches James Stannard and Nick Boylan.

Swim Trafford is the performance pathway within Trafford providing individuals from the borough the opportunity to compete at the highest levels in the sport.
