ALTRINCHAM Swimming Club went into Christmas on a high after winning the National Arena Swimming League Minor Divisions.

It was a landmark achievement for the club, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary next year and consists of more than 150 young members, after scooping the title for the first time.

Head coach Chris Tarry said: “Our team went into the final gala with a 39-point lead due to the hard work and success in the first two galas.

"The swimmers showed no signs of complacency and extended this to a final victory of 62 points over our nearest rival, Whitchurch Wasps.

"It was fitting that there were no standout performances, in fact the team shone as a whole as we dominated the majority of the races.

"This achievement is a massive reward to all of the swimmers, coaches and volunteers who have worked tirelessly over the past 12 months.”

The club was set up in 1992 by Audrey Grundy who is still a very active member of the committee.

Based at Altrincham Leisure centre, it is currently thriving after going through a difficult time as pool hire costs increased.

And Tarry said new members are always welcome with a number of events planned to mark the 25th anniversary.

He added: "During our 25th anniversary year we are planning to hold a number of events to celebrate the occasion and we’d be particularly interested to hear via our website from swimmers from the very early years of the club to help us with these plans.

"We also welcome new members and anyone interested in joining the club can get in touch with us via our website at
