A MARK Derbyshire hat-trick helped fire Trafford into the second round of the Integro League Cup on Tuesday when a thrilling tie at Droylsden ended 5-3 to the men from Shawe View.

The visitors were on top from the start with Ally Brown firing wide from 10 yards after James Coates had parried his initial shot and Derbyshire crashing a great angled drive against the bar.

Trafford deservedly went ahead in the 18th minute when player/manager Tom Baker released Lee Neville down the left and the speedy full-back whipped over a fine cross that Derbyshire glanced past Coates.

Derbyshire, Neville and Andy Langford all went close to increasing the visitors' lead but they were rocked in the 40th minute when Droylsden levelled, Adam Farrell firing home from the penalty spot after Luke Daly had been upended.

Two minutes into the second half Trafford’s lead was restored when Chris Shuker split the home defence and Brown advanced to blast a thunderous drive inside the far upright.

The menacing Derbyshire then made a piercing run down the left but saw his close-range effort blocked by substitute goalkeeper Liam Caddick before setting up Langford for the third, with the midfielder cracking a low shot into the bottom corner.

To their credit, Droylsden played with lots of spirit and pace throughout although there was an element of luck about their second goal in the 77th minute when a Trafford clearance struck Steve Lewis in the stomach and flew past goalkeeper Luke Pilling.

Within a minute it was 4-2 when debutant Kenny Orenuga flew down the right wing, cut inside and crossed for Derbyshire to bundle the ball home at the near post.

Back came Droylsden and with four minutes remaining a rare mistake by Pilling ended with a low cross that skipper Josh Granite turned into his own goal.

Trafford appeared to be relatively undaunted by the 4-3 scoreline and in the dying seconds Derbyshire completed a fine hat-trick when he shot home through a crowded penalty area after tenacious work by substitute Liam Bott.

Tom Baker’s side return to Evo-Stik First Division North action on Saturday when they travel across the Pennines to play Ossett Albion, kick off 3pm.
