THE ‘Get Into Golf – This Girl Can’ campaign at Ringway Golf Club has proved to be a huge success and is now one of the best-performing clubs in the country in the England Golf initiative.

Anne Gawthrope has been a key member of Ringway in developing the campaign and said: “We ran two free taster sessions attracting 40 ladies to come along and try golf.

“The ladies had a go at chipping, putting and long shots into the first green.

“Then our assistant professional Oli Pantoja co-ordinated a team of golf pros to teach three groups with the help of our lady members.

“There was plenty of new raw talent and lots of enthusiasm with positive feedback from the sessions including comments such as 'good fun, excellent coaching and warm welcome’.

“Then 59 ladies signed up for beginner courses using Ringway’s practice facilities, including the new short game area and our private driving range facility.

“Now being planned are intermediate and ‘golf in a day’ courses specially for ladies of all ages and abilities with the aim of giving them an opportunity to enjoy the fantastic game of golf in a fun, friendly and welcoming environment with expert tuition and guidance.

“Ringway is building on the England Golf’s ‘Girls Golf Rocks’ and ‘This Girl Can’ campaigns which saw a fantastic 49 girls passing through the coaching sessions and 59 ladies signing up for the beginner courses.

“The participants can also progress to the full Ringway membership via the associate scheme.”

The Seniors Inter-Club Knockout was introduced into the Manchester Alliance’s programme three years ago and has seen the entry increase year on year as more clubs endeavour to reach the final at Manchester Golf Club, who host the competition each year.

Manchester provided a course and a day to remember for Swinton Park and Davyhulme Park and Swinton Park proved to be too hot to handle as they cruised to victory by 3½-1½.

Leading from the front were Jimmy O’Reilly and Ernie Rimmer by 4&3 and their example was followed by Alan Leigh and Frank Massey 6&5 and club legend Nev Dennis and Jimmy Farragh by 4&3.

DHP gained some consolation with a win from Alan Vaughan and Ron Coleman by 5&4 and the match between DHP’s Joe Mann and Maurice Daniels and Swinton’s Steve Bailey and Barry Lucas was halved.

The new Alliance captain Dave Smith, the Swinton Park professional, will be very pleased to show off the trophy so early into his time in office.
