A DEPLETED Trafford side were dumped out of the Manchester Premier Cup on Tuesday night when Hallmark Security League outfit Abbey Hey won a penalty shootout 4-2 after a goalless 90 minutes.

Manager Tom Baker made eight changes to the side that had performed so admirably at Hyde to draw 2-2 on Saturday and even included himself and assistant Chris Shuker in the starting line-up.

Despite the changes Trafford dominated the first half with Mark Derbyshire going close in the fourth minute and Lee Neville heading a Shuker free kick over the bar in the 13th minute.

Mitch Bryant crashed a 25-yard drive inches wide of the left-hand upright and on the half-hour mark Shuker released Derbyshire, whose effort from close range was brilliantly saved by Jon McIlwaine.

A scrappy and disjointed period saw little goalmouth action before the game burst into life in the 63rd minute when a delightful cross by Shuker was controlled by Derbyshire but the giant striker blasted over from 10 yards.

The hosts sensed an upset was on the cards and in the 74th minute George Noon headed straight at Trafford keeper Saul Lomax-Newton following a deep free kick.

Abbey midfielder Ben McNamara then smashed a stunning drive from 25 yards against the bar with Lomax-Newton beaten before Trafford substitute Kyle Jacobs fired wide from outside the box following a slick move by the visitors.

Despite the efforts of both teams to settle the game in 90 minutes, the game went to a shootout and misses by Ally Brown and Jacobs secured the victory for the hard-working hosts.

On Saturday, Trafford travel to play Colne FC in the First Round of the FA Trophy before hosting high-flying Bamber Bridge in an Evo-Stik First Division North fixture at Shawe View the following week.
