TO celebrate the end of the summer season, Urmston Tennis Club in Moorside Road recently held the inaugural ‘Trafford Open Men’s Doubles’ tournament, with players from a number of clubs in Trafford and across South Manchester taking part.

Qualifying and group stages were hotly contested with a semi-final line seeing Manchester City A beating Manchester City B and Hazel Grove A beating Northern Aces.

The Manchester City A team of Ben Herdan and Scott Heirington overcame the Hazel Grove A team of Mark Beaver and Martin Jemer in the final 6-3, 7-6.

Hosting the event was part of a thank you to the community panel/Trafford Housing Trust for their commitment and support in helping the club to upgrade its facilities, including much needed machinery which enables the grass courts to play better and enable more people to play on them during the season and for a longer period.

The tournament is set to become a regular feature of the Trafford and South Manchester tennis scene and a women's tournament is also planned for next year.

Club chairman, Chris Ryan, said: “Thanks to all those who helped make it possible, played in or indeed came to support the event. 2016 has been another hugely successful season at Urmston Tennis Club and we want to take this into the winter season.”

Following the recent last Welcome Wednesday session of the year, the club is now moving to ‘Super Sundays’ at 1pm, starting on October 9 for new and current members involving adult and junior coaching, matchplay and cardio tennis.

If you are interested in joining or taking part in coaching/matchplay sessions please email urmstonlawntennis1@gmail.com or call 07885412801. The fun and tennis will certainly continue through the winter with group coaching and winter league matches.
