YOUNG athletes from Trafford shone at the Greater Manchester Summer School Games.

Nearly 2,000 pupils from across Greater Manchester gathered at Sport City’s athletics arena after Manchester City Ladies' midfielder, Jill Scott officially opened the event.

A number of world class facilities were utilised for the games, including the Manchester Tennis Centre and National Basketball Performance Centre where competitions took place.

There were competitions taking place in athletics, baseball/softball, dodgeball, football, goalball, golf, netball, new age kurling, rounders, rugby union, basketball and tennis.

Trafford Borough won gold in athletics Year 7/8 quadkids disability, while Bollin Primary School also took a hat-trick of gold medals home in Under-10s Boys Mini Soccer (7v7), Under-10s Girls Mini Soccer (7v7) and Year 3/4 Tri Golf.

Youngsters from Bollin also picked up silver in Year 5/6 Tri Golf, while Brooklands Primary School won bronze in Year 3/4 Mini Tennis.

Matt Stocks, development manager (children and young people) at GreaterSport, and part of the organising committee for the games, commented: “Seeing so much enthusiasm towards sport from schools across the county was great.

"The Greater Manchester School Games is a memorable opportunity for young people to get involved in sport and increase their confidence.

"I believe this is just the start of many young athlete’s sporting journey.

"The standard of talent was high and there effort from all the volunteers and young leaders was great to see.”
