SALE golfer Fiona Flanagan has won the prestigious Bunty Booth Trophy.

The trophy is one of the top events in the busy calendar of the Manchester and District Ladies' Golf Association having been played for since their centenary in 2002.

Each of the member clubs in the MDLGA plays a singles qualifying competition in the previous year to decide who will represent them in the final.

Denton Golf Club, with a course in great condition and providing a true test of golf, were the hosts for the event in which there were 68 clubs represented playing in a singles Stableford format.

In a close contest, 31-handicapper Flanagan posted 35 points to finish ahead of Linda Bailey (Hindley Hall) 34 and Anne Ashworth (Leyland) 33.

The Sale member has a great golfing pedigree as her sister Cath Rawthore is the English Senior Ladies champion and a regular for England Seniors.

Cath is also a Sale member, as are her dad and mum, Frank and Brig Elmore.

MDLGA president Chris Kelly (Bramhall GC) presented the prizes and thanked Denton lady captain Norma Boott for the excellent service provided by staff and members, both on and off the course.

Elsewhere, Romiley Golf Club showed excellent powers of recovery from recent heavy rains as it hosted the first Cheshire Members meeting of the season for a BB Pairs competition, with players coming from across the county to enjoy the scenic course.

First past the post were Chris Dyer and Brian Swift (Grange Park) with 42 points, one more than Simon Feltham (Birchwood) and Dave Barton (Altrincham).

Also in the prizes were Tony Gregory (Stockport) and Charles Beadle (Bramhall) 40 and Terry Gilbert (Altrincham) and Robin Paterson (Sandiway) and Neil MacLeod and Roger Hopton(Tytherington), both 39.

Styal Golf Club will again host the annual Arthritis Research UK (Alderley Edge and Wilmslow branch) golf day on Friday September 16.

It is for teams of four – any combination of men and ladies.
