DAVYHULME Park Golf Club’s new lady captain Hilda Berry is one of a very rare species in her new role as she looks forward to happy and successful year in her second term as a club lady captain.

It is becoming a more common feature in clubs that lady captains are doing a second stint in office but Hilda’s term at DHP means she has been lady captain at two different clubs during her 41 years in golf.

She said: “I have been a member of Davyhulme Park golf club for 15 years.

“Prior to that I was a member of Denton Golf Club for three years and a total of 23 years at Saddleworth Golf Club where I was honoured to be their lady captain in 1994.

“My current handicap is sadly 27 and the lowest handicap I have played off is 17.

“I have played many courses in the area and other parts of the country including Scotland

which I particularly love, and locally I enjoy Lymm and my old club Saddleworth.

“I play twice a week in the summer season and possibly once in the winter, weather permitting and I attend a pilates class once a week.

“My chosen charity for the year along with captain Roland Willott is Francis House Children’s Hospice, and fundraising events and raffles are ongoing throughout the year.

“My personal golfing highlight was scoring an eagle two on the spectacular par four eighth hole (which was reputed to have the highest tee in England) at Saddleworth and winning two major competitions – the Captains and Presidents in 1992 – the year in which my husband Dennis Berry was President .

“Davyhulme Park golf course is a good test of golf at all handicap levels and now I am getting older I embrace the flat landscape and playable terrain which hopefully means I can still play for many years to come.

“We have a full-time competent experienced professional in Dean Butler and assistant Michael Lane at Davyhulme.

“The club also has an excellent caterer and hold many social activities and events.

“We are a forward-looking friendly club and I am proud to be the lady captain for 2016.”

ANOTHER full field for the Manchester Alliance competition at Bramall Park had to endure four seasons of weather during a long, cold and windy afternoon which saw the greens covered in hailstones at one stage.

But the players and the course stood up well to all the elements threw at them to produce some good scores.

The top individual pro was Ringway’s David Brunton with 38 points from Craig Corrigan (36) and home assistant Ollie Whiteley (35).

Hazel Grove’s professional James Rowlands and his amateur partner Mark Thompson led the way in the pro-am with a very impressive haul of 43 points which left them one clear of home pro Craig Daggitt and captain Stephen Williams.

Also in the prizes were Craig Corrigan and Paul Cooney (Wigan) who won a cpo on 41 points from Haigh Hall’s Alan Crompton and John Egan with Ollie Whiteley and Ken Thompson next in with 40.

The prize list was completed by Ellesmere’s John Kilner and Neil Anderson with 40.
