CHESHIRE and England Ladies star Gemma Clews is looking forward to a great year at national and international level after a good winter’s preparation on all aspects of her golf.

Gemma, aged 21, began her golf as a junior at Ashton-on-Mersey Golf Club where she is still a member with plenty of old friends who have helped her early golf development.

She is also a playing member at Delamere Forest Golf Club; where she is also highly regarded.

After being a Cheshire regular at junior and senior level Gemma stepped up to the England scene two seasons ago and has gone from strength to strength, representing her country with great success in the home internationals and European competitions.

She helped England ladies to success in the home internationals and the Vagliano Trophy in Europe.

Her regular coach has been James Salt at the Altrincham Golf School and Ringway GC and she has has also enjoyed winter coaching with England ladies at Quinta do Lago in the Algarve, as well as playing in team and individual competitions in Spain to build up for the challenges ahead.

She is a member of the GB and Ireland Curtis Cup squad, which will take on the USA in Ireland later in the year, and her aim is to make the final selection of eight players.

Gemma will be defending the Comboy Trophy and Formby Leveret as well as playing in top national and international competitions during the season across the UK and Europe.

Gemma said: “I have prepared well and I am looking forward to the new season and later in the year I will assess my progress to see if I am ready to try my hand in the ladies professional circuit.”

In 2015 Bramall Park assistant pro Ollie Whiteley and Michelle Pretty took the White Cup back to Bramall Park GC for the first time in the club’s history.

They came back to defend their title against a quality field at Chorlton containing European Tour professionals and England internationals.

Chorlton recovered well from more recent heavy rain to provide a course in fine condition with excellent greens.

Ollie and Michelle showed their class as they posted a fine haul of 46 points to win the pro-am section and the White Cup.

Following them in the pro-am section were four pairs locked on 43 points competing for the other prizes led in by Birchwood’s Phil and Jill Archer ahead of Mark Smith and Jo Akers (Stamford), Ollie Pantoja and Alison Grant (Ringway) and Ian Ridgway and Deb Eyre (Disley).

In the am-am section there were clear winners in Lisa and Keith Liddle (Blackley) with 45 points – three more than John Davies and Cath Rawthore (Sale) and Brenda Brooks and Kevin Shea (Bolton Old Links).
