BROADHEATH Primary School has cause for double celebration after two teams emerged victorious in recent football championships – and an appearance from a familiar face was the icing on the cake.

After a 16-year dry spell without a cup, Broadheath Primary’s boys football team won this year’s Altrincham League Championship.

The team were delighted with the win, after a tense top of the league clash with Bollin Primary.

To add to the celebrations, the girls football team were the triumphant winners the Altrincham Indoor Championship at Altrincham Leisure Centre on March 31.

After a dramatic final against Navigation Primary, the girls came out on top with a score of 4-2 – doubling the school trophies for the season.

Headteacher Mrs Lyde said: “It has been a magical season and we are all incredibly proud of our teams. It just goes to show what self-belief and hard work can achieve.”

To congratulate the teams on their efforts, teacher Jack Bird and the school football league organiser Nick Leddell arranged a visit from a special guest – professional footballer Emile Heskey.

The former Liverpool and England striker, who now plays for Bolton Wanderers, presented each player with a personally signed medal and individual trophy. He then presented the championship trophies to the winning teams, which will go on display in the school.

Heskey also stuck around to take part in a Q&A session with Key Stage 2 pupils and staff said the children were inspired by the sportsman’s responses.
