A TIMPERLEY school is celebrating after one of its old boys was named in the England football squad.

Former Altrincham College of Arts (ACA) pupil Danny Drinkwater has been called up to the squad for the Euro 2016 warm-up games against Germany and the Netherlands.

It is the first call-up to the senior squad for the 26-year-old Leicester City midfielder, who grew up in Broadheath.

Headteacher at Altrincham College of Arts, Peter Brooks, said: "All the students and staff are delighted for Danny that he has been called up to the England team. We are incredibly proud of his achievements and have been following his progress very closely in school throughout Leicester’s great Premiership season.

"Danny was a great lad in school who certainly loved his sport. He was not only a key member of the most successful football team we have ever had, but also played in virtually every sports team we ran – rugby, basketball, athletics - sometimes playing for the school against the advice of the Manchester United Academy where he was based.

"Danny returned to ACA only last year, giving his time to lead a coaching session for our aspiring young footballers in Years 7 and 8, held on the 3G pitch.

"I hope Danny gets the opportunity to make his debut in the forthcoming international fixtures."
